Ja. Einer der letzten Blogeinträge hat über eine Reduktion des vorgeschriebenen Stundenausmaßes in den V. Jahrgängen an HTLs sowie über eine Kann-Bestimmung für I. und II. Jahrgänge berichtet. Auch die allgemeinen Bildungsziele und didaktischen Grundsätze werden nach Möglichkeit immer wieder einer Überprüfung unterzogen und, falls notwendig, neu formuliert.

Hier heißt es nun:

In Anlage 1 (Allgemeines Bildungsziel, schulautonome Lehrplanbestimmungen, didaktische Grundsätze, Bildungs- und Lehraufgaben sowie Lehrstoff der gemeinsamen Unterrichtsgegenstände an den Höheren technischen und gewerblichen (einschließlich kunstgewerblichen) Lehranstalten) I. Teil (Allgemeines Bildungsziel) wird im vierten Spiegelstrich des zweiten Absatzes das Wort „korrekten“ durch das Wort „praxisgerechten“ ersetzt. (BGBl Nr. 273/2019)

Yes, if needed. The one sentence mentioned above does exactly that. Replace the word „correct“ by the word „practice-oriented“, i.e real-life, and you´ll get what you want: authentic language as spoken by experts in their own fields. It´s this authenticity of language we´re actually striving for in our CLIL classrooms.  Right?

Durch eine Änderung der Lehrpläne der Höheren technischen und gewerblichen Lehranstalten 2015 wurde auch CLIL in den I. und II. Jahrgängen auf eine neue rechtliche Basis gestellt. Dort heißt es jetzt:

Im I. und II. Jahrgang können bis zu 36 Unterrichtsstunden pro Jahrgang in Abstimmung mit dem Pflichtgegenstand „Englisch“ in englischer Sprache unterrichtet werden. (BGBl Nr. 273/2019)

Zusätzlich dazu wurde auch eine Reduktion der verpflichtenden Anzahl von CLIL-Stunden im V. Jahrgang verordnet:

… im V. Jahrgang mindestens 40 Unterrichtsstunden pro Jahrgang, in Abstimmung mit dem Pflichtgegenstand „Englisch“ gleichmäßig über das Schuljahr verteilt in englischer Sprache zu unterrichten. (BGBl Nr. 273/2019)

Oder anders gefragt: Can we start to do CLIL earlier than in year 3?

As I said before, start whenever you´d like to. History, Geography, Sports etc. are perfect for students to get used to CLIL … and the revised regulations of 2019 (see above) give you the chance to. Create risk-free zones for your students and have them experience something different, and they won´t be puzzled that much when regular, compulsory CLIL will finally be introduced in year 3.

Es gibt kein „schlechtes“ CLIL. CLIL-Unterrichtende sollten bewußt entsprechende Ziele verfolgen und passende Methoden zum Erreichen dieser Ziele anwenden.

Es gibt eine Reihe von Kriterien, die man zur Einschätzung der „Qualität“ von CLIL heranziehen kann, aber wie bei jeder anderen Art des Unterrichtens ist dieser Form der Qualitätsmessung mit Vorsicht zu begegnen. Zu behaupten, dass nur eine Unterrichtsstunde, die mindestens drei bis fünf CLIL-Elemente enthält, eine echte CLIL-Stunde sein kann, wirkt demotivierend und ist für Unterrichtende wenig hilfreich.

Oder anders gefragt: What is good CLIL, what is bad CLIL?

There are criteria around, of course. Be careful though. Peeter Mehisto´s overview of the essentials of CLIL might be helpful. Keeping in mind what he says is „quality, ethical CLIL“ (Mehisto, Peeter: Excellence in Bilingual Education. A Guide for School Principals. Cambridge University Press, 2012, pp. 52/53) will keep you on track, I´m sure. So why not check with the chart attached regularly?

Der letzte Blogeintrag hat einige Verwunderung hervorgerufen und viele Fragen aufgeworfen. CLIL, sprachsensibler Unterricht, … und was sonst noch? Wir sprechen hier von teils ähnlichen Konzepten, angewendet in unterschiedlichen Lehr- und Lernsituationen, mit identischen, ähnlichen oder auch gänzlich anderen Zielen. Ein Beitrag des Goethe-Instituts möchte eine erste Orientierunghilfe in diesem Begriffsdschungel geben, wahrlich food for thought. Auch wenn sich dieser Blog im nächsten Schuljahr wieder hauptsächlich mit CLIL beschäftigen wird, Fragen zu ähnlichen Konzepten sind jederzeit herzlich willkommen.

As I said last week, sure not. Ever heard of CLILiG before? CLIL in German, e.g. in Finland, Norway, Australia? Different languages, you see, but similar approaches, similar ideas, similar aims all over. Nein, natürlich nicht. CLIL kann ganz unabhängig von der verwendeten Arbeitssprache bzw. zu vermittelnden Fremdsprache angewendet werden, da es sich dabei v.a. um ein Methodenset handelt. Vor kurzem konnte ich in Norwegen erleben, wie dort jungen Erwachsenen mit Migrationshintergrund parallel zu einer Berufsausbildung mithilfe von CLIL auch die dazu notwendigen Norwegisch-Kenntnisse vermittelt werden. Im deutschsprachigen Raum nennen wir das „sprachsensiblen Fachunterricht“, d.h. Unterricht im Fach kombiniert mit der Vermittlung der nationalen Unterrichtssprache.

Sure not, CLIL is totally independent of the languages being taught. Couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I was going on a CLIL study trip to Norway. What did I see? CLIL methods being used in vocational training to teach Norwegian to young adults (with basic to medium skills of Norwegian) from abroad preparing for job life in their new home country.  Woodworking students from Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Syria in a workshop being led by Norwegian master craftsmen, and the Norwegian language teacher always at their side. Fantastic.

Im letzten Blogeintrag wurde erwähnt, dass manche Lehrer/innen auch gewisse Risiken im Einsatz von CLIL sehen und befürchten, dass dadurch im Fachbereich “Lerndefizite” entstehen könnten, insbesondere bei Schülerinnen und Schülern, deren Fremdsprachenkenntnisse nicht dem erwarteten Niveau entsprechen. Auch Schüler/innen äußern manchmal Ähnliches. Um diesen Befürchtungen zu begegnen, heißt es in Zusammenhang mit der Leistungsbeurteilung in den entsprechenden Handreichungen für HTL und HLFS eindeutig:

Bei der Leistungsbeurteilung ist streng zwischen Sprach- und Fachkompetenz zu differenzieren. Mangelnde Sprachkompetenz darf nicht in die Leistungsbeurteilung einfließen und keinesfalls negativ bewertet werden. Empfohlen wird jedoch, englischsprachliche Fachkompetenz als positiv verstärkenden Leistungsanreiz in der Leistungsbeurteilung zu berücksichtigen. Leistungsfeststellungen in Deutsch mit optionalen Zusatzfragen, die auf Englisch gestellt und beantwortet werden, haben sich in der Umsetzung bewährt. (vgl. Auf den im letzten Blogeintrag erwähnten Grundsatz soll deshalb hier nochmals hingewiesen werden: Vorsichtig einsteigen, niemanden überfordern – weder Schüler/innen, noch Lehrer/innen –  die Ziele erklären und eine risikofreie CLIL-Zone schaffen … und los geht´s!

Patrick de Boer from the Netherlands discusses just that and says, “… you should try to balance content and language. It’s like a balance really. If the content is hard to understand, you have to go easy on the language and vice versa.

In other words, during the first first CLIL lessons you have to be quite easy going on the content. If need arises for the content to become a little more advanced, consider switching back to the first language for a moment. Ja. Ein „optionaler“ Einstieg ist für die Schüler/innen sicherlich eine ideale

Auch in vielen CLIL-Kursen wird diese Frage immer wieder ausführlich diskutiert. Warum bis zum III. Jahrgang warten? Unterrichtsgegenstände wie Geografie, Geschichte u.a. eignen sich ideal zum Einstieg, CLIL-geeignetes Unterrichtsmaterial  dazu ist z.B. im Internet relativ leicht zu finden ist und einige österreichische Schulbuchverlage bieten für diese Fächer CLIL-Zusatzmaterial an.

Vorsichtig einsteigen, niemanden überfordern – weder Schüler/innen, noch Lehrer/innen –  die Ziele offenlegen, eine risikofreie CLIL-Zone schaffen …und los geht´s!

Sure you can. I tend to say, “The earlier, the better.” Patrick de Boer, enthusiastic maths and CLIL teacher from the Netherlands, once wrote about the first CLIL lessons in class, “The use of the second language is a threshold for any person, let alone a student who has just started a new school career. In CLIL subjects are taught through a second language, making it quite hard for students to understand anything you say.

Especially the first couple of lessons are crucial. You set the expectations for the rest of the year during this very important first stage of their CLIL learning. In my experience, clarifying to students it is okay to find things difficult and not understand everything you say might already can already be a great relieve for them.

I always tell them I will occasionally translate things during the first couple of weeks. After about eight weeks, I no longer do this and will only speak English. And I have never had problems with it.“ (vgl. https://www.clilmedia.com/)
